Lost Hikers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains

The 11 hikers in the Sierra’s were at 9000 feet. California still has snow at that level and this week has been weather challenged. They will find themselves safely home

My Sierra Survival Story

I've seen this survival technique listed as a way to stop panic if lost - singing or whistling. I and my two other 13 year old friends went backpacking for 10 days in the American River Canyon. What were our parents thinking? We were all fairly experienced in the wild but... K.O. and I went off for a day hike leaving Chris behind to fish at the lake we were camping near. We only took a bit of water and some food with us, no map, no compass, no nothing. Canyons are potentially dangerous places to hike. They are littered with dry river beds and once you get off trail, each river bed and small hill all end up looking alike. It was summer of 1975, not a particularly hot day but dry enough for us to start panicking about water, rattlesnakes, buzzards over head following us and also putting our friend left behind in danger. I led K.O. and I for 8 hours in a huge loop that took us back to the beginning of our trail, we were 3 days into our 10 day trip. Instincts took over my radar and something else had us whistling for a good 6 hours of that “trip”. Knowing where the sun was at all times also was a huge help.

Global Warming and Cows!?

Global Warming Culprits: Cars and ... Cows

U.N.-Sponsored Report Says Belching Cattle Add to Climate Change, but Solutions Affordable

If you're worried about global warming or water pollution, you can blame cars and factories, the White House, and the oil companies.

Cow
According to a new report, cows may be one of the biggest contributors to global warming on the planet. Their burps, that is.

Or you can blame cows and pigs. Yes, cows and pigs.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in a report called "Livestock's Long Shadow," says, "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."

"The findings of this report," it says, "suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity."

Chewing Your Cud

Cows do not add to the amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

They do not run aground and spill crude oil. But they do ruminate -- which is to say that they give off methane when they chew their cud and belch, and nitrous oxide and ammonia when they leave manure all over the barnyard.

So that pungent odor you smell on a farm? It's bad for the global environment.

Methane, while less prevalent in the air than carbon dioxide, is 23 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas, the FAO report says.

Do some math, the authors say, and you find that livestock is responsible for 18 percent of the world's greenhouse gas problem.

What's more, cows take up a lot of space, grazing on land that could feed many more of the world's people if it were used for crops.

The FAO says grazing takes up 26 percent of the land on Earth that is not covered by ice -- 30 percent if you count the land used to grow feed for the animals.

And livestock does a lousy job of cleaning up after itself.

Farm waste, washed downhill by rain, is a major source of water pollution. The methane and ammonia in cow dung rise into the air with evaporating water -- and fall back down as ingredients of acid rain.

In China, phosphorus and nitrogen contamination are flowing into the South China Sea, killing off marine life.

Why is believing in Global Warming so difficult for some?

Self-sufficiency and Independence
I just got back from a family trip. One of these "family" members actually believes that global warming is a myth created by the Democrats so that They can raise taxes on the rich. I can not actually understand his belief system but it goes as far as refusing to recycle. Shaking my head in disbelief, what does one say to such a person?
Of course you already know that he voted for Bush twice and still believes all of his lies. Perhaps you are thinking that this man is uneducated, retarded, has no reality barring emotions. Odd, he is a rich stock broker. He has a beautiful wife and two lovely girls. He comes from a Democratic family.
If someone has a factual list of all of Bush's crimes, I'd love to see a clearly written fact sheet that lists undisputable facts of Bush's actions, behaviors and decisions that have led all of us into this horrible world crisis.
Fears of all sorts have swept through me and thoughts of owning a gun have crossed my mind. I'm past those feelings of fear and have joined a group that sells Survival Kits through my own home based business called. http://www.quakedog.com/homebasedbusiness. At least I can help myself and others be prepared for an event that would require self sufficiency.
Warm Regards,
